SpaceX Expands Starlink Capabilities with $2.6B Spectrum Purchase from EchoStar
Elon Musk's SpaceX has struck a $2.6 billion stock deal with EchoStar Corp. to acquire unpaired AWS-3 licenses, bolstering its Starlink satellite internet service. The transaction follows a $17 billion agreement between the companies in September and awaits regulatory clearance.
The additional spectrum will enhance Starlink's speed and coverage as demand for affordable, high-speed internet surges globally. The service already operates in over 100 countries, serving residential, maritime, and aviation markets.
EchoStar's spectrum divestiture comes after FCC scrutiny of unused licenses. The company recently sold frequencies to AT&T for $23 billion and reported a $16.5 billion write-down as it scales back 5G operations.
